The History of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway
There is no shortage of rich history and culture in Indianapolis, but one of the most emblematic attractions our great area has to offer is the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. We take pride in financing cars with race car agility or commuter-friendly engines so close to this area of pride!
A Brief Overview of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway
With around 235,000 seats and up to 400,000 capacity with extra seating, there is no sports arena that can host more fans than the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Built in 1909, this 2.5 mile racetrack is home of the Indy 500 and Brickyard 400.
Inspired by the race tracks in France, Carl G. Fisher began dreaming up the speedway in 1905. Convincing three local financiers to invest in his pipedream, construction began in 1909 and finished the same year, opening to its first race on June 5, 1909.
Until the Great Depression, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway grew in unrivaled popularity, drawing international drivers to put the track to the test and entertaining thousands and thousands of fans.
As soon as the Great Depression ended, the IMS picked back up in popularity, drawing many Americans and visitors to enjoy the thrilling sport of racing. In the last 75 years, NASCAR, Formula One, and the Grand Prix have been the biggest draws to the track, welcoming people from all over to take part in this rich and exciting part of Indianapolis history.
